Yara is dedicated to making farming a profitable business, while ensuring that it is done in the most sustainable manner
Main content
Yara is in a position to help meet some of the major global challenges of our time. Feeding a growing world population – at the same time fighting extreme hunger and poverty – is one such challenge, where the development of sustainable agriculture plays a key role.
“Sustainability,” when applied to agriculture, implies that key resources such as soil, nutrients and water cannot be consumed indiscriminately, without continually being replenished. As the world’s leading producer of plant nutrients in the form of mineral fertilizer, Yara has developed extensive agronomic knowledge that lies at the core of its business. Yara helps farmers boost their yields, contributing to sustainable agriculture both locally and globally.
This is also aimed at creating a profitable business and decent livelihood for farmers and farm workers, along with an adequate and affordable output of foods and fibers for a growing population. An agricultural sector that is financially solid and environmentally sound helps preserve biodiversity and builds a foundation for rural communities.
Yara, as the world’s leading producer of mineral fertilizers, is a key player in promoting and facilitating sustainable agriculture. Not only does Yara supply the global agricultural sector with plant nutrients that play a crucial role in feeding the world and sustaining farms and rural communities, Yara has developed extensive agronomic knowledge that it shares with farmers, and constantly works to develop new and improved products and practices.
Agriculture must provide sufficient financial rewards for farmers, encouraging them to continue production and conserve the environment.
Agriculture should minimize the use of non-renewable resources, as far as possible replenishing tapped resources, protecting and enhancing the environment and natural resources.
Agriculture, long engulfed by globalization and corporate interests, can also help keep local communities thriving and viable by contributing to economic and social development – including the provision of healthy food.
Yara has launched an ambitious research project (TraP) to reduce phosphorus leakage through agriculture. Improvement of phosphorus fertilization efficiency and use of soil phosphorus reservoirs is the main focus, and so far the results are very promising.
