Yara’s Africa Program is part of our business strategy for the African market – and an excellent demonstration of our corporate citizenship approach put into practice. Supporting the African Green Revolution benefits Africa’s agriculture and builds our business acumen.
Our Africa Program and citizenship strategy have gradually taken shape since Yara was established as a separate company after being demerged from Hydro in 2004.
Our corporate citizenship approach centers on a set of shaping issues which correspond to four major global challenges: energy supply, climate change, food security, human health. These are key issues that are directly relevant to our present and future business, and also areas in which we as a global company can contribute towards solutions.
In the case of Yara’s Africa Program, the main point of attention has been food security, which is the primary concern behind the launch of the African Green Revolution. Therefore, the Yara Prize has been awarded to recognize significant contributions to the reduction of hunger and poverty in Africa. Several of the laureates have been honored for their direct or indirect contribution towards developing agriculture as a viable business.
Another key program element, the hosting of the Oslo series of Africa Green Revolution Conferences, was a major contribution towards a targeted multi-stakeholder dialogue to foster public-private partnerships and concrete business endeavors. Another global challenge affecting Africa, which was raised at the AGRCs, is climate change.
Our corporate citizenship approach is based on its integration with the company’s business strategy and the employment of our core business. Consequently, the Africa program is lodged with our Business Unit Africa, and incorporated into our business strategy for Africa.
Yara’s core business is producing and supplying mineral fertilizers for growers around the world. Yara’s fertilizer product portfolio includes our crop nutrition knowledge and understanding of local markets and growing conditions.
African leaders, supported by agronomic and economic expertise, have declared that agriculture is vital to the continent’s development, and that increased application of fertilizer is crucial to improve agricultural productivity and increase food production. With our products and knowledge, long-time presence and our familiarity with African agriculture, we are positioned to serve Africa’s farmers while contributing towards solving major global challenges.
