Partnering for African agriculture and food security

Yara's Africa Program

Yara has been doing regular business in Africa for three decades, extending its engagement in recent years. Combining our unique global position and corporate citizenship approach, we actively support the call for an African Green Revolution.

Fertilizer in Africa

Concerned with the low productivity and profitability of African agriculture, we have taken on a role as global catalyst in promoting public-private partnerships in the sector. Particular attention has been given to smallholders – the great majority of the continent’s farmers – encouraging local entrepreneurship and market development.

The Africa Program began in 2005 as a response to the call for an African Green Revolution voiced by Kofi Annan, then Secretary General of the UN. As part of Yara’s centennial celebrations in 2005, the project commenced with the establishment of the Yara Prize, supporting the Sauri Millennium Village, and included hosting the African Green Revolution Conferences 2006–2008. Since then we have initiated partnership projects and launched the agricultural growth corridor concept.

The Africa Program demonstrates Yara’s approach to corporate citizenship. By contributing towards the solution of major global challenges – and supporting the African Green Revolution – we apply our corporate knowledge and engage our core business, drawing on our global market position and integrating initiatives into our regional business strategy.

    African Green Revolution

Africa has initiated its own genuinely African Green Revolution, aiming to improve agricultural productivity and drive economic and social development.

  • Agricultural growth corridors and African partnerships

    Growth corridors

Yara has initiated and involved itself in the innovative concept of agricultural growth corridors aimed at developing the entire value chain in regions suitable for agriculture. We have also initiated three major public-private projects aimed at developing local agricultural value chains, in Tanzania, Malawi, and Ghana.
