Partnering for African agriculture and food security
Main content
Yara has been doing business in Africa for 30 years. As the only global fertilizer company to have maintained a presence on the continent, Yara is in a strong position to play an active role in developing African agriculture and contributing to the African Green Revolution. Yara’s approach uses its knowledge and expertise to facilitate and initiate public-private partnerships.
Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan called for an African Green Revolution in 2004 and Yara was one of the first private companies to respond. Yara established an Africa Program, taking a lead in promoting contributions from the private sector to the development of African agriculture. Yara has responded to the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, especially the first one that aims to halve hunger and poverty. Yara’s engagement is linked to its business strategy for Africa, to develop Yara’s position on the continent.
After supporting and participating in the UN Millennium Project’s Task Force on Hunger, Yara went on to design its Africa Program in 2005 – the year of the company’s own centennial. The program consists of three areas of activity, and encompasses several projects:
Yara has taken a lead in promoting public-private partnerships in support of an African Green Revolution.
Yara is initiating African value-chain partnerships, offering its own core-business knowledge and expertise to help develop African agriculture.
Yara has also committed itself to tackling transportation and distribution challenges in Africa, playing a key role driving efforts towards public-private investments in infrastructure, helping to get nutrients to farmers, and help the farmers get their goods to market.
Yara established the Yara Foundation for an African Green Revolution, launched The Yara Prize and initiated the African Green Revolution Conference to share public- and private-sector ideas for supporting African agricultural development.
