Yara has, over the past 10 years, developed products and solutions for odor control and hydrogen sulfide abatement.
Sulfate-reducing bacteria can form in pipelines, tanks and reservoirs and lead to emissions of H2S. This not only exposes workers to toxic gas, it also has negative effects on the quality of the oil and can lead to corrosion.
Yara has developed a specific range of environmentally friendly nitrate-based biodegradable chemicals used in well construction and reservoir-treating operations around the world to prevent the formation of H2S.
This solution, marketed under the name PetroCare, can also have microbial-enhanced oil recovery effects.
PetroCare has been chosen by some of the oil majors for their fields in the North Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of West Africa and in the Russian Far East. Results from these fields show near-elimination of H2S emissions.
