From fears to bumper crops
"Yara helped my family stay in this industry" Australian potato farmer, Aaron Haby
"Yara helped my family stay in this industry"
After switching to Yara's fertilizer program, the profitability of the Haby family's Nadine potato crop blossomed: 60 percent more high-value potatoes and 24 percent less potatoes of no value.
Aaron Haby had been growing potatoes on his property for more than 10 years when he began to have doubts about what he could do about dwindling yields. He attended a growers’ meeting to try to find something new and heard Matt Wetherall from the Yara team talking about the nutritional requirements for potatoes.
"I've always been willing to try new ideas," Haby says. “I was impressed with what Matt told us about Yara's solutions and decided to give them a go. That was a wise move on my part.
"You could say my meeting with that Yara team helped my family stay in this industry.”
Haby claims he’s “very pleased” with Yara’s products because the quality is consistent and the growth response reliable. “The Nadine is a hungry, but lazy potato,” he says. “They like their food close to them, available, and plenty of it - just like a Labrador dog. They seem to like what they're getting.”
Haby's success stems from the careful application of a range of Yara products recommended by a team from Yara and retail partner Elders. The results: Clearly measurable improvements in growth, quality, shelf life and profitability. The agronomist team working with Haby did not relax with success, and years of cooperation have resulted.
“Since then Yara has worked closely with me to improve yield and quality,” Haby adds. “There’s been help, support and guidance from the guys and scores of e-mails gone back and forth. I feel as if my business really matters.”
Yara’s Matt Wetherall says the Yara team has "gradually changed Aaron's inputs, always looking for clues as to what is working - and what’s not.”
