Greenhouse atmosphere enrichment

In greenhouses, without a supply of carbon dioxide (CO2)the content can drop to under half of what is normal in air. Ventilation is not always enough to keep the normal CO2 concentrations.Depending on the crop and variety being grown, supplying CO2 may give:

  • Faster growth
  • Larger and more abundant flowers
  • Better colour
  • Plants that are bigger and of better quality

Ripening of fruit and vegetables

Ethylene has the effect of ripening all plants, fruits and vegetables. Some fruits secrete ethylene during ripening (e.g. apples). Green bananas are stored in atmospheres to which ethylene has been added so that the process can be speeded up.

Freeze Branding

Freeze branding as a method of livestock identification is a painless, humane procedure which utilises dry ice. Super-cold or chilled branding irons are applied to the skin of the animal, which destroys or alters the pigment-producing cells, this causes the hair to re-grow white. This produces the unique mark of the branding iron.
